What actually changes the price.
Two quotes on the same house can differ by thousands, and it is rarely because one company is greedy. It is usually because they are quoting different work. These are the variables that move the number, so you can compare like for like.
Capacity, done properly
A load calculation, not a guess from square footage. Oversizing is the most common error in this climate and it costs you twice — more up front, then a house that cools fast and stays humid. How sizing really works.
Efficiency tier

The ductwork
New equipment on failing ducts underperforms from day one. If runs are leaking into the attic or were undersized originally, that has to be part of the quote — and a quote that ignores it is not cheaper, just incomplete.
Access and placement
An attic air handler with a crawl-through hatch is a different day’s work from a garage closet. Rooftop equipment, tight side yards and upper-floor condominium units all add real labour, and they should be priced honestly rather than discovered mid-job.
Electrical and drainage
Older homes often need the disconnect, breaker or whip brought up to current code, and drain lines re-run to somewhere sensible. Small items individually, but they are the ones that turn a quoted price into a different final invoice elsewhere.
Permits and inspection
Replacement work in Florida is permitted and inspected. Any quote that leaves it out is either forgetting it or planning to skip it, and skipping it is a problem the day you sell the house.

Four mistakes that
cost people real money.
“Go one size up to be safe” is the most expensive advice in this industry. An oversized system short-cycles, never dries the air properly, and wears its compressor out faster. Bigger is not safer here — it is worse.
The condenser and the indoor coil are matched as a system. Pairing a new outdoor unit with an old coil usually delivers neither the efficiency nor the reliability you paid for, and can void the warranty on the part you just bought.
Nobody negotiates well with no cooling and a houseful of people. If your system is ageing but still running, getting a free estimate now means you choose on your terms instead of accepting whatever is available in August.

How to tell it is actually time.
Most people replace either far too early, talked into it by a repair visit, or far too late, after a summer of expensive patches. The honest signals sit in between, and none of them is simply the age on the label.
Watch the pattern rather than the incident. A system that has needed two or more real repairs in two years is telling you something a single breakdown is not. Run times creeping longer for the same comfort means capacity is fading. Refrigerant that keeps needing topping up is a leak, and paying to refill a leaking system every year is buying the same problem repeatedly. Rooms that never balanced can be a duct issue rather than an equipment one — worth checking before you replace anything.
Set against that, a system that cools well, holds humidity and has had one ordinary repair is usually worth keeping. We will say so.
