What makes a mid-century home harder to cool than a newer one?

A concrete-block house from the mid-century boom years was engineered around cross-ventilation, deep eaves, and jalousie windows, not around a central air system, because for many of these homes AC was added later rather than designed in from the start. That history is still visible in the attic, the ductwork, and the additions bolted on over the decades, and it changes what a straightforward cooling upgrade actually involves compared with a house built in the last twenty years. None of it is a reason to avoid modern cooling; it is a reason to plan the installation around the house you actually have.

The biggest factor is usually insulation, or the lack of it. Many homes from this era were built with minimal or no attic insulation, because they predate the energy codes that came later, which means the roof deck transfers heat into the attic and down into the living space far more readily than a modern build allows. Why is one room in my older house always warmer than the rest?
