Not every visit that gets called a tune-up does the same amount of work. Here is what a thorough maintenance visit actually checks, in what order, and why each step earns its place on the list.
What does a technician actually test electrically?
Ask ten homeowners what happens during an AC tune-up and most will describe a filter change and little else. That is a fraction of the work a proper visit should cover. A cooling system has electrical components that wear, refrigerant levels that drift, a coil that gets dirty on both sides, and a drain that clogs quietly until it does not. A real tune-up checks all of it against a standard, writes down the numbers, and tells you honestly what it found rather than just wiping a panel and moving on.
A thorough visit starts with the parts most likely to fail without warning. The run capacitor gets tested against its rated microfarad value, since a capacitor that has drifted even 10 percent below spec is a near-term failure waiting for a hot afternoon. The contactor is checked for pitted contacts, which run hot and eventually stick or fail open. Wiring connections get a visual check and a snug-down, since a loose lug is a common cause of intermittent no-cooling calls.
Amp draw and voltage
A technician should also measure the compressor's running amperage against the nameplate rating and confirm the voltage supplying the unit is within range. Amps that run high can point at a struggling compressor or a starting problem long before it fails outright, which is exactly the kind of finding a tune-up exists to surface early.

If the numbers are off, that is a finding to discuss, not something to quietly top up on the spot — refrigerant does not get consumed, so a low reading almost always means a leak worth locating rather than masking.
Why this step gets skipped
Taking accurate pressure readings takes real time and a calibrated gauge set, which is exactly why a rushed visit skips it. If nothing was measured, nothing was actually confirmed about how the system is performing.
What happens to the coils and airflow?
Both coils get attention, because a dirty coil on either side quietly costs efficiency and run time. The outdoor condenser coil is inspected and cleaned if it is carrying dirt, grass clippings, or the fine debris that builds up between visits; a coil caked with debris cannot reject heat properly no matter how correct the refrigerant charge is. The indoor evaporator coil gets a visual check for buildup as well, since airflow restriction there is what leads to a frozen coil later. Routine maintenance is where this kind of buildup gets caught before it becomes a summer breakdown.

The blower wheel and motor are inspected, and static airflow is checked where duct access allows, since a system fighting restricted airflow works harder for the same result regardless of how clean its coils are.
Why does the drain line belong on the checklist?
The condensate drain line is flushed or treated on every proper visit, and in this climate that step is not optional. A system removing gallons of moisture a day in our humidity grows algae in a warm, wet drain line quickly, and a clogged line backs up until a safety float switch shuts the whole system down or, worse, water finds its way into a ceiling. Clearing and treating the line is a small step that prevents one of the most common warm-weather service calls we see.
