"Bigger cools better"
The most expensive myth here. An oversized system short-cycles, never runs long enough to remove humidity, and wears out faster. Correct sizing produces a more comfortable house than extra capacity ever will.
"Close vents in unused rooms"
It feels logical and is generally counterproductive. Closing vents raises duct pressure, increases leakage, and can push the system outside its design airflow — occasionally causing the coil to freeze.
"Turn it way down to cool faster"
A system cools at one rate. Setting 65 instead of 74 does not accelerate anything; it simply means the system runs past the point you wanted and costs you more.
"Maintenance is just an upsell"

"Any refrigerant top-up is normal"

Ask for the leak to be located and quoted. A contractor unwilling to do that is selling you a subscription rather than a repair.
