Why is my AC running but blowing warm air?
Warm air from a running air conditioner is one of the most common calls we take, and it is also one of the most misdiagnosed. The system sounds like it is working because the indoor blower is still moving air, so the natural assumption is a refrigerant problem. Sometimes it is. More often it is something upstream of the refrigerant that has quietly stopped the outdoor unit from doing its job, and the fix is smaller than the panic suggests. Working through the causes in order, from the cheapest and most likely to the most serious, is how you avoid paying to solve a problem you do not have.
Cooling only happens when the outdoor condenser and its compressor are running and moving heat out of the house. The indoor fan can run perfectly well on its own, which is why a system can push plenty of air that simply is not cold. Almost every warm-air fault traces back to the outdoor side not pulling its weight, and the causes fall into a short list.
The thermostat is asking for the wrong thing
A thermostat left on fan ON rather than AUTO runs the blower continuously, so you feel air between cooling cycles that has not been chilled. A schedule that quietly reverted after a power blip, or a mode knocked to heat, produces the same complaint. It is worth ruling out first because it costs nothing.
The outdoor unit has lost power
Condensers sit on their own breaker and often a separate outdoor disconnect. A tripped breaker, a blown fuse in the disconnect, or a failed capacitor can stop the compressor while the indoor air handler keeps running on its own circuit. The tell is simple: stand by the outdoor unit and listen. Silence there while the inside fan runs points squarely at the outdoor side.
Airflow has starved the coil into freezing
A filter left in too long, or a blocked return, chokes airflow across the evaporator coil until it drops below freezing and ices over. A block of ice cannot absorb heat, so the air leaving the vents turns warm. This one hides its own cause — by the time you look, the filter that started it is behind a wall of frost.
The system sounding like it works is exactly why warm air gets misdiagnosed — moving air is not the same as cold air.

Four checks cover most of what a homeowner can do without tools or risk, and doing them first often turns a service call into a two-minute fix.
The filter and the thermostat
Pull the filter. If you cannot see light through it, replace it and set the thermostat to COOL, AUTO, and a few degrees below room temperature. A filthy filter is the single most common root cause we find behind a warm-air complaint, and it is the one thing you can always fix yourself.
The breaker and the outdoor unit
Find the air-handler and condenser breakers in your panel. If one has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again immediately, stop — a breaker that will not hold is protecting you from a real fault, not being difficult. Then look at the outdoor unit: the large top fan should be spinning whenever the system calls for cooling. A humming unit with a still fan usually means a failed run capacitor, which is a technician's job.
Give a frozen coil time to thaw
If you find ice on the copper lines or the outdoor unit, switch the system to OFF but leave the fan set to ON to move room-temperature air across the coil and melt it. That can take a few hours. Restarting a frozen system just refreezes it and can damage the compressor.
When does warm air mean stop and call?
Most warm-air situations are safe to poke at for a few minutes. A few are not, and knowing the difference protects both you and the equipment.
Ice, burning smells, or a breaker that keeps tripping
A coil frozen solid, a hot or electrical smell from the vents, or a breaker that trips the instant you reset it all say the same thing: turn the system off and have it looked at. Repeatedly resetting a tripping breaker or running a system that smells hot risks the compressor, the wiring, or worse.
Warm air that returns within a day
If a filter change or a thaw fixes it and the warm air comes straight back, the filter was a symptom, not the cause. A coil that keeps freezing points at low refrigerant or an airflow restriction deeper in the system, and low refrigerant specifically means there is a leak somewhere — topping it up without finding the leak just pays for the same repair twice. That is the point to bring in a technician who can put gauges on it rather than keep guessing.
How a technician actually finds the cause
A proper diagnosis is quick when it is done in the right order, and it is worth understanding so you can tell a thorough visit from a parts-cannon guess.
The first checks are electrical and mechanical, because they are the most common and the cheapest to confirm: is the outdoor unit getting power, is the capacitor within spec, is the contactor pulling in, is the fan motor turning freely. Only once the system is confirmed to be running does refrigerant come into the picture, measured with gauges against the temperatures the system is actually seeing rather than topped up on a hunch. A technician who reaches for refrigerant before confirming the basics is skipping the cheap answers, and low refrigerant is never the whole story anyway — it means a leak that has to be found and sealed. Regular maintenance catches most of these before they strand you on a hot afternoon.
Why warm-air calls spike here in July
Warm-air complaints cluster in the deep summer for reasons specific to this climate. A system in Broward or southern Palm Beach runs eight or nine months a year, often from mid-morning to past midnight, so the parts that fail from sheer run time — capacitors, contactors, fan motors — give out here far sooner than they would up north. On the barrier island and the intracoastal side, salt in the air corrodes electrical contacts and capacitor terminals, which is why a warm-air call in Lighthouse Point or Deerfield Beach so often turns out to be a failed capacitor rather than a refrigerant problem. And the load itself is brutal: on a 92-degree afternoon with our humidity, a system that is even slightly undersized or slightly low on charge simply cannot keep up, and the first sign is air that is cool but never quite cold. None of this is exotic — it is the ordinary consequence of running cooling equipment this hard, this close to the ocean, for most of the year.

Why is my AC blowing warm air only at night?
Two common reasons. If the thermostat fan is set to ON, you feel unchilled air between cooling cycles, which is more noticeable when the house has cooled down in the evening. The other is a system that keeps up during milder hours but falls behind when the day's heat has soaked into the house; that points at a system running low on capacity or charge, worth having checked.
Can a dirty filter really make the air warm?
Yes, indirectly and commonly. A clogged filter starves airflow across the evaporator coil until the coil drops below freezing and ices over. A frozen coil cannot absorb heat, so the air turns warm. The filter is the cause, the ice is the mechanism, and the warm air is the symptom. Changing the filter and letting the coil thaw resolves it if you catch it early.
Is warm air an emergency?
Usually not, but a few versions are. Warm air on its own can wait for a normal appointment. Warm air with a burning or electrical smell, a breaker that trips the moment you reset it, or a coil frozen into solid ice means switch the system off and call rather than keep running it, because those risk damaging the compressor or the wiring.
Should I just add refrigerant?
No, and reputable companies will not simply top it up. Air conditioners do not consume refrigerant; if the charge is low, it has leaked, and it will leak out again. Adding refrigerant without finding and sealing the leak is paying for the same repair repeatedly, and an overcharge is its own problem. The right step is a leak search, then a repair, then a correct charge.
My outdoor fan is not spinning. What does that mean?
If the indoor fan runs but the large outdoor fan sits still, the compressor is almost certainly not running either, and the most common reason is a failed run capacitor — a small, inexpensive part that is nonetheless a technician's job because of the stored charge it holds. A seized fan motor or a tripped disconnect can also cause it. Do not run the system in this state for long.
How quickly can you get to a warm-air call in summer?
