Why does starting the AC trip the breaker?

What should I do, and not do, when the breaker trips?
Reset it once, and only once. If it holds, note what the system was doing when it tripped and keep an eye on it. If it trips again immediately, stop - do not keep flipping it hoping it takes, and do not hold it in place. A breaker tripping repeatedly is functioning correctly by refusing to stay on; forcing it defeats the one safeguard standing between a contained electrical fault and a fire.

Run hours are the biggest factor: a compressor that starts and stops dozens of times a day, nine months a year, simply cycles its capacitors and contacts far more than the same unit would up north, and both wear out from cycling more than from age alone.
