Frozen evaporator coil
Ice on the indoor coil, or on the refrigerant lines outside, is one of the most visually obvious cooling problems and one of the most commonly mishandled. Here is what actually freezes a coil in a South Florida home, the right way to thaw it, and how to tell a one-time event from a recurring fault.
Why does an AC coil freeze in the first place?
A frozen evaporator coil is one of the few AC problems you can actually see, and that visibility tends to prompt the wrong instinct - to keep running the system, hoping it clears itself, or to crank the thermostat down to compensate for the warm air the ice is now producing. Both make it worse. A coil, whether it is the indoor evaporator or the line set running out to the condenser, freezes because something has interrupted the normal exchange of heat across it, and the fix depends entirely on identifying what that something is rather than treating the ice itself as the problem.
An evaporator coil needs a steady flow of warm room air moving across it to stay above freezing while it absorbs heat. Cut that airflow, or reduce the amount of heat available to absorb, and the coil's surface temperature drops until moisture in the air freezes directly onto it.
Restricted airflow
A clogged filter is the most common cause by a wide margin. Blocked return vents, furniture pushed against a supply grille, a collapsed section of flexible duct, or a failing blower motor that no longer moves enough air will all do the same thing: starve the coil of the airflow it needs to stay above freezing.
Low refrigerant
A system running low on refrigerant, almost always because of a leak somewhere in the line set or the coil itself, drops pressure on the low side of the system low enough that the coil frosts even with normal airflow. This is the one cause that will not resolve on its own no matter how long you wait, because the refrigerant does not replenish itself.
A dirty coil surface
A layer of dust or grime on the coil fins acts as insulation, blocking the heat transfer the coil depends on even when airflow past it is otherwise fine. This builds up slowly, over missed filter changes and maintenance cycles, until the coil finally tips into freezing.
Ice on the coil is the system telling you it can no longer move enough air or enough refrigerant - not a sign to run it harder.

Turn the thermostat to OFF, but leave the fan set to ON rather than AUTO. Running the blower without asking the compressor to cool moves room-temperature air across the coil and melts the ice gradually, without shocking the system. Do not try to speed this up with a hair dryer, hot water, or by chipping at the ice - all three risk damaging the thin aluminum fins or puncturing a refrigerant line.
Depending on how much ice has built up, a full thaw can take anywhere from a couple of hours to most of a day. Put towels down near the indoor unit, because a coil that has been frozen produces a real amount of water as it melts. Do not restart the system on COOL until you can see the coil is completely clear - restarting onto even a partially frozen coil sends liquid refrigerant back toward the compressor rather than vapor, which is one of the more damaging things that can happen to it.
What should I check once the coil has thawed?
A thawed coil is a reset, not a repair, unless the underlying cause is gone with it. Replace the filter if it is at all dirty - this alone resolves a large share of freeze-ups. Confirm that supply and return vents around the house are open and unobstructed, and that nothing is blocking the return grille the system pulls air through.
If the filter was clean and the vents were clear, look at how long it took to freeze and how quickly it comes back. A coil that iced up again within a day of thawing, with a clean filter and open vents, is telling you the cause is inside the system rather than around it - most often low refrigerant from a leak, or a blower that is not moving the air it should. That is the point to bring in a technician with gauges rather than keep thawing it yourself.
Why does a frozen coil turn into warm air at the vents?
Because ice cannot do a coil's job. Once the surface is frozen solid, it stops absorbing heat from the air passing over it, so the air leaving your vents comes out warm or barely cool even though the blower is still running. This is why a frozen-coil call and a warm-air call so often turn out to be the same underlying event - the freeze happens first, quietly, and the warm air is simply the moment you notice it. If you catch the ice early, before it has built into a solid block, thawing and correcting the airflow issue is usually enough. Left running for a full day or more, a frozen coil raises the odds that the real cause is refrigerant loss rather than a filter.
Why frozen coils are a summer-long risk here, not just an occasional one
In much of the country, a frozen coil is a rare event tied to one obvious mistake. In South Florida it is closer to a recurring risk, because the conditions that cause it are present almost constantly. Cooling systems here run for eight or nine months a year, often close to continuously through the hottest stretch, which means a filter that would last a season up north gets buried in dust, pollen, and construction grit far faster - and a buried filter is the single biggest cause of a frozen coil we see. The humidity load adds to it: systems working overtime to pull moisture out of the air are also working their coils harder, leaving less margin before a partial restriction tips into a freeze. Homes with additions or converted garages, common across older Broward neighborhoods, often have ductwork that was never quite sized for the extra square footage, which chronically restricts airflow to whichever room sits at the end of the run - and that room's supply grille is frequently where the first ice shows up. A filter check on a fixed schedule matters more here than almost anywhere else in the country.

Questions and answers
Can I just run the fan to melt the ice faster?
Setting the fan to ON while the thermostat is off is exactly the right move - it moves room air across the coil and melts it gradually. Do not add a hair dryer, hot water, or scraping to speed it up; all three risk damaging the coil fins or a refrigerant line, turning a thaw into a repair.
Will the coil freeze again if I just clean the filter?
Often, yes, if a dirty filter was the actual cause - and it is the cause more often than not. If it freezes again within a day or two despite a clean filter and open vents, the cause is elsewhere, most likely low refrigerant or a weak blower, and it needs a technician rather than another thaw.
Is a frozen coil dangerous to the system?
The ice itself is not, but restarting the system before it is fully thawed can be. Turning the compressor back on with liquid still on the coil sends liquid refrigerant back toward it instead of vapor, which can damage the compressor. Waiting for a complete thaw before restarting is the important part.
Does low refrigerant always mean a leak?
Yes. Air conditioners do not consume refrigerant through normal use, so a system that is low has lost it somewhere, usually a small leak in the coil or the line set. Simply adding refrigerant without finding and repairing the leak means the coil will freeze again once the level drops again.
Can the coil freeze even if the filter is clean?
Yes. A clean filter rules out the most common cause, but blocked return air, closed vents in unused rooms, a failing blower motor, or low refrigerant can all freeze a coil with a spotless filter. That is when it is worth having someone check airflow and refrigerant level rather than assuming the filter is always the answer.
How long does it take to thaw and get a technician out?
A full thaw can take a few hours to most of a day depending on how much ice built up.
