Why does my AC coil keep freezing even after it's been thawed?

There is a particular kind of frustration in fixing the same air conditioning problem twice. The coil froze, it got thawed and the filter got changed, and three months later it is frozen again. The capacitor died, it got replaced, and it dies again within a year. When a fault repeats on equipment that was supposedly already fixed, the instinct is to blame the part or the luck of the draw. Almost always, the real explanation is simpler and less comfortable: the first repair treated the symptom that was visible, not the condition underneath it that produced the symptom in the first place.

A coil freezes because airflow across it has been restricted enough that it drops below freezing, and it will keep freezing until whatever is restricting that airflow is actually resolved. A clogged filter is the most common cause and the easiest to fix, which is exactly why it gets blamed every time — but if the filter was changed and the coil froze again within a few months, the filter was never the real story.

What actually keeps a coil freezing
