Do UV lights actually kill everything in the ductwork?

UV lights and air purifiers occupy an odd space in home cooling — sold with sweeping claims by some installers, and waved off entirely by skeptics who assume they do nothing at all. Neither extreme holds up well against how these devices actually work. UV lights and in-duct air scrubbers have real, physical mechanisms behind them, and independent testing shows measurable effects under the right conditions. What that testing does not show is a whole-house cure-all. The honest version of this topic is a story about a specific tool for a specific job, not a verdict of miracle or myth.

No, and no reputable source claims that. A UV light installed near the evaporator coil works by exposure — microbial growth on or very near the light's direct line of sight can be reduced over time, which is a real, documented effect. Air moving past the light at normal duct speeds, however, gets only a brief moment of exposure, nowhere near enough to meaningfully affect what is moving through the rest of the ductwork.

Where the effect is real

The genuine value of a coil-mounted UV light is on the coil itself: reduced buildup on that one surface over time, which can help with the musty coil odor and biological film that otherwise accumulates in a dark, damp spot. That is a narrower, more useful claim than "purifies your whole house," and it happens to be the one the evidence actually supports.

Do UV lights stop mould from growing on the coil?

They can meaningfully reduce it, which is the strongest, best-supported use of the technology. Because the light sits close to the coil and shines directly on the surface where moisture and dust collect, it is positioned exactly where its limited range is most effective. It is a supplement, not a substitute

A UV light does not replace clearing a clogged condensate line or cleaning an already-fouled coil; it helps prevent regrowth on a coil that is otherwise being maintained properly. Installed on a neglected system, it is working against conditions it cannot fully overcome.

Do air purifiers and scrubbers really clean the whole house?

Only the air that actually passes through them, and that is the central limitation to understand. An in-duct air scrubber or purifier treats air as it moves through the ductwork on its way to a room; it has no effect on air already in the room, air near a specific source of dust or odor, or air in a part of the house the system is not actively conditioning at that moment. A whole-house improvement in dust and general air freshness is a fair, evidence-supported expectation over time, as conditioned air keeps cycling through. A dramatic, immediate transformation is not.
