Why does an air handler grow mould in the first place?
A musty odor drifting from the vents is one of the more common calls tied to the air handler, and it almost always traces back to moisture that had nowhere to go. The indoor half of a cooling system produces water constantly as a normal part of removing humidity from the air, and that water is supposed to drain away cleanly. When it does not, the same dark, enclosed closet that keeps the equipment out of sight also keeps it out of mind, and a small amount of standing moisture is all mould and mildew need to take hold. This is a comfort and odor issue worth taking seriously, not a health diagnosis — here is what actually causes it and what genuinely clears it up.
An air handler combines every condition mould favors: it is dark, it sits at a cool temperature, and it produces condensation as a routine part of its job. As humid air passes over the cold evaporator coil inside, water condenses out of it, just as it does on a cold glass on a humid day, and normally drains away through the condensate line. That water, along with the fine dust that settles on a coil over time, is enough organic material and moisture for mould and mildew to establish if conditions hold for long enough.

Where does the moisture inside an air handler actually come from?
The condensate drain line is the most common source by far. It is a small tube carrying the water the coil condenses out of the air, and it clogs easily with the same fine dust and biological buildup that collects anywhere consistently damp. A clogged line backs water up into the drain pan and, eventually, into the cabinet itself, creating standing moisture that has nowhere to go.

Why does the musty smell only happen when the AC first turns on?

Can I just pour bleach down the condensate line myself?

Will an air purifier fix a mould problem in the air handler?

New equipment starts clean, but the same conditions — condensation, a drain line that can clog, a dark closet — apply from day one. Regular maintenance matters just as much on a new system as an old one; it simply starts the clock over rather than removing the need.
