Burning smell or smoke

Stop. Shut the system off at the breaker, and if there is smoke or the smell is strong, get everyone out and call 911. Do not run it again until a licensed technician has inspected it. This is the one sign that is never wait-and-see.

Repeated breaker trips

A breaker that keeps tripping is doing its job — the system is drawing more current than it should. Repeatedly resetting it risks equipment damage and fire. Leave it off and get it diagnosed.

Ice on the lines or coil

Ice means airflow or refrigerant trouble. Running a frozen system can destroy the compressor, the most expensive component you own. Switch it off, let it thaw, and book a diagnosis.

Weak or warm airflow

Usually a filter, a dirty coil, or low refrigerant. Not an emergency, but it will not improve on its own, and a struggling system uses more power while it fails slowly.

New noises

Grinding, buzzing and rattling are parts telling you they are wearing out. Caught early these are minor repairs; ignored, they tend to take other components with them.

Water where it should not be

Usually a blocked condensate drain. Not dangerous to you, but genuinely damaging to floors, ceilings and drywall, so it is worth clearing promptly.

Most AC failures announce themselves. Acting on the early signs is the difference between a small repair and a compressor.

The failures that strand people in August almost always announced themselves earlier, and were rationalised away. A system that takes longer to reach temperature than it did last year is not simply dealing with a hotter summer; it is losing capacity. A breaker that trips occasionally is not a quirk of the panel, it is a circuit drawing more current than it should. Ice on the refrigerant line is never normal, whatever it looks like. A smell that appears when the system starts, then fades, usually points at the drain pan or the coil rather than at anything outside. And rising bills with unchanged habits are a measurement, not a mood. None of these are emergencies on the day they appear, which is exactly why they get postponed until they are. Catching them is the entire argument for scheduled maintenance, and if something on this list sounds familiar, have it looked at while it is still small.

When to stop immediately

In a climate where the system rests for a few months a year, a developing fault has time to announce itself gently. Across Broward County it gets no such pause. Equipment in Margate, North Lauderdale and Coconut Creek runs through most of the calendar, so a weakening capacitor or a fouling coil moves from a small symptom to a failure far faster than the same fault would elsewhere. The wet season compounds it: humidity keeps drain lines wet year round, and a line that is merely slow in April is blocked by August. The practical consequence is that the window between noticing something and losing cooling entirely is short here, which is why we would rather look at a symptom early than meet it as an emergency.

Burning smell — shut it down

Kill power at the breaker. If there is any sign of fire, call 911 first. Electrical faults in air handlers are a genuine fire risk and are never worth a wait-and-see approach.

Breaker keeps tripping — leave it off

Each reset sends the fault current through the system again. Stop resetting it, leave the breaker off, and have the cause found before anything else.

Frozen coil — power off, let it thaw

Running it iced up can wreck the compressor. Switch it off, let it melt fully, and have the underlying airflow or refrigerant problem diagnosed before restarting.

Questions and answers

My AC smells like burning. What do I do?

Turn it off at the breaker immediately. If you see smoke or flames, or the smell is strong, get everyone out and call 911 before anything else. Do not restart it until a licensed technician has inspected the system.

Is it safe to keep resetting a tripping breaker?

No. Repeated tripping means the system is drawing too much current, which is an electrical hazard. Each reset repeats the fault. Leave the breaker off and have the cause diagnosed.

My AC is frozen. Can I chip the ice off?

Do not. Switch the system off and let it thaw on its own — chipping risks puncturing the coil, which turns a repair into a replacement. Once thawed, the underlying cause still needs diagnosing.

How urgent is water around the indoor unit?

Not a safety emergency, but worth prompt attention. It is usually a blocked condensate drain, and standing water damages building materials and encourages mould.

My power bill jumped but the AC seems fine. Why?

A system can lose efficiency long before it loses cooling. A dirty coil, low refrigerant or a failing component all make it run longer for the same result. A tune-up usually identifies it.

My system is noisy but still cooling. Can it wait?

It depends on the noise, and the distinction is worth knowing. A rattle is usually a loose panel or debris and is genuinely minor. A squeal often points at a blower motor or bearing. A hard clunk on start-up, or a grinding sound while running, suggests something mechanical that will not fix itself and may take other components with it. Cooling while making a serious noise is not reassurance — it is borrowed time.

The air is cool but weak. Is that a refrigerant problem?

Not usually. Weak airflow with cool air points at the air side rather than the refrigerant side — a blocked filter, a dirty blower wheel, a collapsed or disconnected duct, or a coil fouled enough to restrict flow. Low refrigerant more typically produces air that is not cold at all, along with long run times. The distinction matters because one is a cleaning job and the other needs a leak found and repaired.
