Why won't my AC turn on at all?

A system that blows warm air is at least doing something. A system that will not turn on at all is a different, more unsettling problem: the thermostat is dark, the indoor fan is silent, and nothing you press changes anything. In a South Florida home this is rarely as dramatic as it feels. Most no-power calls trace back to one of a handful of ordinary causes - a dead battery, a tripped breaker, a safety switch doing exactly what it was designed to do - and only a smaller share point to a genuine electrical fault. Working through the likely causes in order saves you from assuming the worst.

A cooling system that gives you nothing - no fan, no compressor, no thermostat display - has almost always lost power somewhere between the wall and the equipment, rather than failed internally. The list of places that can happen is short, and most of them are not expensive to fix.

A dark thermostat

If the thermostat screen itself is blank, the unit downstream never even gets asked to run. Battery-powered and hybrid thermostats lose their charge quietly, and a low-voltage fuse inside the air handler can blow and take the display with it. This is the cheapest possible cause and worth ruling out first.

A tripped safety float switch

Most air handlers, especially ones tucked in an attic or a closet above living space, have a small float switch sitting in the condensate drain pan. If the drain line clogs and the pan fills, that switch cuts power to the whole system on purpose, to stop water from overflowing into the ceiling below. It is a safety feature working correctly, not a malfunction, and it is one of the most common reasons a system in this climate goes completely dead.

No power reaching the air handler

A tripped breaker, a pulled or corroded outdoor disconnect, or a failed transformer inside the unit all stop the system before it can do anything. The difference between these matters for what happens next, which is why the outdoor disconnect and the breaker panel are the first physical things worth checking.

A dead system in this climate is more often a clogged drain line asking to be noticed than a failed unit asking to be replaced.

Is this different from an AC that runs but never cools?

Yes, and the distinction matters for how urgent the problem is. A system that runs and blows warm air still has a working blower, a working thermostat circuit, and power reaching the indoor unit - the fault is narrower and usually cheaper. A system that gives you nothing has lost power somewhere upstream of all of that, which is a shorter but more binary list of causes: a switch, a breaker, a fuse, or a safety device has interrupted the circuit entirely.

Practically, this also changes what you should try. With warm air, running the system while you investigate is fine. With a completely dead system, resist the urge to keep flipping the breaker or restarting the thermostat repeatedly - if something tripped it once, doing that again without finding out why risks turning a simple reset into a real repair.

What can I safely check before calling?

A few checks take five minutes and no tools, and they resolve a real share of no-power calls on their own.

Thermostat and breakers

Replace the thermostat batteries if it takes them, and confirm it is set to COOL. Then find the air-handler and condenser breakers in your panel; if one has tripped, reset it once. If it holds, give the system a few minutes to respond.

The condensate pan and float switch

If your air handler is in an attic or a closet, look for a shallow pan underneath it. Standing water there means the float switch has done its job - the fix is clearing the clogged drain line, not overriding the switch, and that is worth leaving to a technician the first time so the pan does not overflow again.

The outdoor disconnect

Check that the pull-out disconnect near the outdoor unit is fully seated. A disconnect left ajar, or one with corroded contacts, can cut power to the outdoor half of the system while leaving the rest untouched.

When does a dead AC mean stop and call an electrician or technician?

Most no-power situations are safe to check for a few minutes; a few call for immediate caution.

A breaker that trips again the instant you reset it is not being difficult - it is protecting the wiring or the equipment from a fault that is still present, and resetting it repeatedly risks making that fault worse. Standing water anywhere near the air handler or the electrical panel is also a reason to stop rather than keep testing switches by hand. In all of these cases, the honest answer is to leave the diagnosis to someone qualified rather than keep cycling breakers or opening panels yourself.

How does a technician find a no-power fault?

A methodical technician works from the outside in, because that is both the safest order and the one that finds the fault fastest.

The first stop is the disconnect and the breaker panel, confirmed with a meter rather than a guess, to make sure voltage is actually present up to the unit. From there the transformer and the low-voltage control circuit get checked, since a blown control fuse is a common and inexpensive cause of a completely dark thermostat even when the main power is fine. If the float switch is the culprit, the fix is clearing and flushing the condensate line, not just resetting the switch, or the same shutdown happens again the next humid week. Routine maintenance that flushes the drain line twice a year catches most of these before they strand you.

Why South Florida homes see more no-power AC calls

Two things push no-power calls higher here than almost anywhere else in the country. The first is humidity: with cooling systems running most of the day for eight or nine months, condensate lines carry a steady stream of water and, given our warmth and moisture, algae and biofilm build up inside them faster than they would in a drier climate. A clogged line trips the safety float switch far more often here, which is why a dead system in a Broward or southern Palm Beach home so frequently turns out to be a drain problem rather than an electrical one. The second is weather itself. Summer lightning is routine in this part of the state, and a nearby strike can send a power surge through the disconnect and take out a control board or transformer even when the rest of the house barely flickers. Older homes with air handlers original to a 1970s or 1980s build, common across inland Broward, also carry aging low-voltage wiring and fuses that were never sized for today's smart thermostats, which adds one more place for a no-power fault to hide.

Why is my thermostat completely blank?

Almost always a power problem, not a broken thermostat. Check for dead batteries first if it takes them, then look at the breaker panel and the low-voltage fuse inside the air handler. A blank screen with power confirmed everywhere else usually means that small fuse has blown, which is an inexpensive fix.

What is a float switch and why did it shut off my AC?

It is a small safety device sitting in the condensate drain pan under your air handler. When the drain line clogs and water backs up, the float rises and cuts power to the whole system before the pan can overflow into your ceiling. It is working as designed; the real fix is clearing the clogged line, not bypassing the switch.

I reset the breaker and it tripped again immediately. What now?

Stop resetting it. A breaker that trips the instant power is restored is detecting a real fault, most often in the compressor, the wiring, or a failed component, and repeated resets can turn a contained problem into a bigger one. This is a call-a-technician situation rather than a check-it-yourself one.

Can a power surge from a storm really kill my AC?

Yes. Lightning strikes near your property, or even on the utility grid nearby, can send a voltage spike through the outdoor disconnect that damages a control board, transformer, or capacitor without tripping a breaker at all. It is common enough in South Florida's storm season that surge protection is worth asking about.

My outdoor unit has power but the indoor unit does nothing. What does that mean?

That split points at the low-voltage control circuit or the thermostat wiring between the two, rather than a main power problem. A blown control fuse, a loose thermostat wire, or a failed transformer inside the air handler are the usual suspects, and finding which one takes a meter rather than a guess.

How fast can you get to a completely dead AC?
