The timing works in your favour

Cooling demand peaks on bright hot afternoons, which is precisely when a solar array produces most. That alignment is genuinely favourable compared with heating-dominated climates.

Efficiency before panels

Every watt your cooling wastes is a watt of array you have to buy. Fixing ducts, sizing correctly and upgrading an old system first means a smaller, cheaper array does the same job.

Solar will not fix bad cooling

Panels change where the electricity comes from, not how much you need. An oversized or leaky system remains uncomfortable and wasteful regardless of what powers it.

The logic is genuinely sound here: solar output peaks in the same hours cooling demand peaks, which is a better match than most of the country enjoys. What that does not mean is that panels fix an inefficient system. Generating power to feed a system that is oversized, poorly ducted or badly maintained simply moves the waste rather than removing it, and it is considerably cheaper to reduce consumption than to generate more electricity. The sensible sequence is therefore to get the cooling side right first — correct sizing, sound ducts, equipment in good condition — and then size a solar array against the load that remains. Doing it in the other order tends to produce an array specified for a consumption figure that should never have been that high. Roof condition and orientation matter too, and any planned roof work should happen before panels go on. Start with a system in proper condition and consumption you have already reduced.

It works best on the wide, open, west-facing roofs common in Sunrise, Boynton Beach and the newer parts of Plantation, where there is little tree cover to interrupt the panel array and where the same lack of shade is driving the cooling load in the first place. Coastal properties are a different calculation: salt exposure means the air conditioning equipment underneath will likely need replacing sooner, so the array should be sized against the load you will actually have rather than the one you have today. Either way, reducing the load comes before generating the power.

Questions and answers

Will solar panels eliminate my AC bill?

They can offset a substantial share of it, but "eliminate" depends on array size, your consumption and how billing and any credits work with your utility. Reducing cooling waste first makes that outcome far more achievable.

Should I install solar before or after replacing my AC?

Improve the cooling first where it is due for replacement. Sizing an array around an inefficient system means paying for generation capacity you would not have needed, and arrays are not easily downsized afterwards.

Do you install solar?

No. We are an air conditioning and refrigeration company — we will happily make sure your cooling is efficient and correctly sized so a solar investment goes further, but the array itself should come from a solar specialist.

Does a heat pump make sense with solar?

Yes, particularly for an all-electric home. A heat pump handles both cooling and the occasional cold snap on electricity alone, so a single generation source covers the whole comfort load.

Will solar help during an outage?

Only if the system includes battery storage and is configured for it. Many grid-tied arrays shut down during an outage for safety, so do not assume solar alone keeps the AC running.

Should I fix my air conditioning before adding solar?

Almost always, yes. Sizing an array against inflated consumption means paying to generate power you did not need to use, and the cooling improvements are usually the cheaper half of the equation. Getting the system, the ducts and the sizing right first gives you a smaller, less expensive array that covers a larger share of your actual demand. It is the same money spent in a more effective order.

Does running air conditioning on solar change how it should be maintained?

Not mechanically — the equipment neither knows nor cares where its electricity came from. What can change is your attention to it. When power feels free at midday, it is easy to stop noticing a system that is gradually working harder. The run-time and consumption data most solar installations provide is genuinely useful here, precisely because it makes that drift visible early.
