It is easy to wave past as an upsell. It is not one. The mechanics of salt corrosion are well understood, coastal-rated equipment exists specifically to slow them, and whether the upgrade is worth choosing depends mostly on one thing — how close the home actually sits to the water.
Coastal-rated is not a single certification but a set of manufacturing choices aimed at the part of the system that takes the abuse: the outdoor coil and cabinet. A coated coil has a factory-applied protective layer over the fins and tubing, sealing the metal away from the salt film that would otherwise sit on it after every humid, salt-laden day. Coastal cabinets typically pair that with corrosion-resistant fasteners and hardware, since ordinary screws and clips pit and seize in the same conditions that attack the coil.

Where the coastal spec matters most
